Wittingen makes its urban history visible in specific locations. At several stations in the old town, the Schusterstiefel themed trail uses oversized boots to introduce personalities from Wittingen’s urban history. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Wittingen can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture and History

In its present form, St. Stephen’s Church is the hastily restored ruin of a basilica dating from around 1250. The Wittingen ramparts are the surviving remains of fortifications erected after the town was destroyed in 1519. The historic Landwehr von Rade border fortification has been preserved over a length of approximately four kilometres and is one of the best-preserved facilities of its kind in Lower Saxony.

Museums and Exhibitions

At Junkerhof Wittingen, a historical exhibition presents everyday objects from the Gifhorn region. The museum in the village of Lüben presents historical household and farm implements, an exhibition on hunting and fishing, and the exhibition “From Seed to Harvest”. Haus der Landschaft in Knesebeck is a 1835 stair granary with an exhibition on forestry tools, forest measuring instruments, and equipment for peat extraction. An exhibition at the village community centre in Zasenbeck explores the history of a village on the former inner-German border.

Brewing Culture

The Wittingen private brewery is located in Wittingen’s more than 1,200-year-old town centre. A guided tour of the private brewery includes a tour of the brewhouse and explains modern beer production as well as the history of beer. The brewing rights of the Wittingen private brewery have been historically documented since 1429.

Cycling and Hiking

The Wittingen Tour begins in Wittingen’s old town and takes the form of an approximately 40-kilometre cycling tour through the landscape around Wittingen. The Südheide Gifhorn hiking brochure includes 13 adventure and hiking routes, some of which are signposted.

Water and Open Spaces

Wittingen’s sports harbour has a complete mooring system, water and electricity connections, toilets, and showers. There are 20 guest berths and 20 motorhome pitches there. Nachtweide and Schönungsteiche form an urban recreational area next to the town hall. The “Strandbad Knesebeck” campsite is assigned to Wittingen.
