Getting here and transport

For getting around by car, the A 7 between Fulda and Würzburg and the A 71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt both cross the district from north to south. Since 1 January 2025, the Bad Kissingen district has been part of the Mainfranken Local Transport Association (NVM). Spa and cultural destinations in Bad Kissingen

Several different cultural themes come together in the town of Bad Kissingen. The spa garden ensemble is an exceptional contribution by Bad Kissingen to the World Heritage Site The Great Spa Towns of Europe. The Regentenbau is home to the Max Littmann Hall, one of Europe’s finest concert halls. The Fan Fountain has also long been part of the townscape: it was added to the municipal park in 1959 and quickly became one of the town’s best-known landmarks.

The Bismarck Museum includes the historic Bismarck Apartment, with its original interior from his stays in Bad Kissingen between 1876 and 1893, as well as museum exhibition rooms on Bismarck’s politics. The Upper Saline Museum also features a historic Bismarck Apartment and focuses on handmade toys from the Rhön and around the world, as well as the history of salt and salt production. A hiking route in Bad Kissingen follows the favourite route of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and leads through the spa garden, Luitpold Park and over the Altenberg to the Sisi monument. The graduation tower in Bad Kissingen is still used for saline inhalation. The Dampferle steamboat still runs along the Saale on its original route; services are seasonal.

Near Münnerstadt is the “Michelsberg” Extra Tour, certified as a premium trail. Varied paths lead from Münnerstadt town centre up to Michelsberg, the hill that gives the route its name; you can get there by train, bus or car. In Hammelburg, the wine education trail offers a different focus: it is 5.8 kilometres long and has 17 stops. It also marks the starting point of the 84-kilometre Abbot’s Way between Hammelburg and Fulda. The wine education trail also presents the long-standing historical connection between Franconia’s oldest wine town and Fulda, dating back to 777.

The region around Hammelburg is ideal for cycling and mountain biking along the Franconian Saale and the Thulba. The Franconian Saale Wine Enjoyment Trail has two variants: the Wine Route runs from Bad Kissingen via Ramsthal and Sulzthal to Trimburg. The Saale Route runs via Wirmsthal, Euerdorf and Aura along the Franconian Saale, also reaching Trimburg. The Hammelburg route and the two variants of the Wine Enjoyment Trail therefore offer different highlights: a route with stops about wine history, a region for cycling tours and two paths through towns along the Saale.
