Nüdlingen brings together village history, sacred art, and unusual collections with trails leading to a former US Army airbase. The local history museum spans topics from the way of life of the village’s former residents to the history of the fire service and an owl collection with more than 3,000 exhibits. There is also art in the Catholic Church of St. Kilian and Companions, and the Eichhörnchen circular trail. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on the collections and architectural history or on the outdoor trails.

Local History Museum: Village Life and Collections

The Nüdlingen Local History Museum presents the way of life of the village’s former residents, as well as sacred and secular cultural artifacts from various periods up to the present day. It is housed in a half-timbered building erected as a school in 1794 and the adjoining gate tower dating from the 13th century. The two parts of the building already mark distinct historical periods: the former school building and the medieval gate tower. Visits are by prior arrangement. Be sure to arrange this before you arrive.

The local history museum includes a fire service museum established in 1982. It traces 200 years of fire service history, from leather buckets to a motorized suction and pressure pump. The wide range is brought to life by the very different pieces of equipment on display. Another distinctive collection is devoted to owls: it comprises more than 3,000 exhibits from around the world, made from every kind of material. Together, the fire service history and owl collection offer very different points of focus—from the development of firefighting equipment to the variety of a single motif across countries and materials.

Art in the Church and Chapel

The Catholic Church of “St. Kilian and Companions” houses a Stations of the Cross created by Peter Herrlein, a statue of the Madonna, a Pietà, and depictions of Saint Sebastian and Saint Kilian. The Stations of the Cross are specifically associated with the artist; the other works add further subjects to the sacred art in the church. Visitors interested in religious art will find specific works here rather than just a general cultural theme.

Regular Protestant services are held in the Sebastiani Chapel in Nüdlingen. As service times may change, check the current schedule if you plan to time your visit around a service.

Circular Trails to the Former Airbase

The Eichhörnchen circular trail leads to the former US Army airbase. Other circular trails run along the old bunkers there. The trails offer different points of focus: the Eichhörnchen Trail leads to the former airbase, while the other circular trails follow the old bunkers. This makes the historic landscape a different focus from the museum collections or the art in the church. Check the site’s current accessibility before planning your trip.
