Euerdorf can be explored through very different traces: dinosaur tracks in the rock, paths through vineyards and forests, historic buildings, and the Saale all shape the local themes. You can plan your outings around geology, outdoor activity, or history. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.

Dinosaur Tracks and the Path Through Time

The Euerdorf dinosaur tracks are among Bavaria’s 100 most beautiful geotopes, an accolade awarded by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. Nowhere else in Bavaria can they be seen on such a large scale at their discovery site. You can reach the geotope via both the Euerdorf circular hiking trail and the Path Through Time, which runs between Bad Kissingen and Euerdorf. This means that more than one marked hiking trail leads to the tracks.

The Path Through Time is 7.5 kilometers long and is considered an easy hike. For the most part, it follows forest and meadow paths to the Terra Triassica Museum in Euerdorf. At 11 stations, information panels explain the flora and fauna of the respective geological periods over the past 477 million years. Along this route, after 3.75 kilometers, you reach the “Euerdorf Dinosaur Tracks” geotope via the Wichtel Caves. Dinosaurs left their footprints there in the soft ground. The route length, stations, and discovery site give the geological theme a clear sequence.

Vineyards, Forests, and Historic Buildings

The “Wine & Stone” panoramic trail offers a different impression of the landscape. It starts in Euerdorf next to the church at the Terra Triassica Museum, Gerichtsgasse 22, and leads through vineyards and forests, past places of interest. If you make this route the focus of your trip, it offers a contrast with the Path Through Time: here, the landscapes mentioned are part of the route description, while there, the geological periods and stations take center stage.

The buildings also tell stories of different eras. The Terra Triassica Museum is housed in the former hunting lodge of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, built in 1598. St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish Church once served as a fortified church. The gate tower is part of Euerdorf’s late medieval fortifications. It has three stories, stepped gables, and a small late Gothic sandstone relief on its exterior. Because an apartment is located in the tower, it is also called the “gatehouse.” The church is also a prominent landmark for the start of the panoramic trail.

The Saale and the Wine-Growing Village of Wirmsthal

The natural Saale meadows and riverbanks around Euerdorf provide a habitat for many animal and plant species. Near the Old Saale Bridge, a wading pool fed with fresh Saale water lies right beside the river. There is also a launch and landing point at the bridge: a river trip can begin or end there. So, alongside the hiking trails, places and activities directly connected with the river can also feature in your trip planning.

Wirmsthal, the northernmost wine-growing village in the Franconian wine-growing region, belongs to the market municipality of Euerdorf. Thanks to its favorable climate and Triassic soils, it produces distinctive Franconian wines such as Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, and Domina. Wirmsthal adds a focus on winegrowing to the geological and landscape themes, specifically associated with this district.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider which experiences matter most to you: the tracks and geological periods along the Path Through Time, vineyards and forests on “Wine & Stone,” historic buildings, or the Saale. Choosing the focus you want for each day thus brings you back to the specific themes that distinguish Euerdorf and its associated municipality.
