Hammelburg offers plenty of reasons to spend your days outdoors or in town: historical traces around Saaleck Castle, views across the Saale Valley, wine trails and a local baked specialty. When planning, it is worth comparing the options: would you like to learn more about the town’s history, go on a wine hike or explore by bike?

Castle, Old Town and Wine Traditions

The oldest parts of Saaleck Castle date back to the 12th century. The first vineyards of Fulda Abbey were cultivated from there, and the wines were stored in the castle cellars. This makes the site a meeting point of architectural history and Hammelburg’s long wine tradition. From the imposing keep, the view on clear days extends across the Saale Valley to the Rhön.

The terroir f at Ofenthaler Berg in Hammelburg offers a different perspective. From there, you can look across the old town, surrounded by walls and towers, towards Schlossberg with Saaleck Castle and on to the rolling landscape of the Vorderer Rhön. If you would like to combine views of the town with its history, you can choose a walking tour of the old town. It explores the town’s history spanning more than 1,300 years and how viticulture has shaped Hammelburg for centuries.

The historic Herrenmühle also explores the subject of wine, alongside another important regional food. Since 1991, it has housed a modern, interactive museum on “Bread and Wine”; the exhibition was updated in 2017. The guided town tour, the castle and the museum thus offer different ways to discover the region’s history and local culture.

Wine Trails and Outdoor Views

For a shorter wine outing, the certified Weinlehrpfad Hammelburg wine trail is 5.8 km long. Along the way, it offers insights into the close ties between the abbots of Fulda and Hammelburg, as well as the distinctive features of viticulture in the Franconian Saale Valley. A guided experience offers a different focus: guests hike through Hammelburg’s vineyards with local guides, enjoy views over the town and learn more about local viticulture.

The roughly 60 km-long Franconian Saale Wine Enjoyment Hiking Trail also passes through Hammelburg and by Saaleck Castle. The two trails differ in their stated length and focus: the 5.8 km Weinlehrpfad is devoted especially to viticulture and history, while the longer route leads through Hammelburg and past the castle. Which one suits your plans also depends on how much time you have set aside for a hike.

If you prefer to explore by bike, the Thulbatal cycle path offers a roughly 16 km ride from Hammelburg to Oberthulba. You can include it in your plans as a separate cycling option; the distance does not indicate a walking time or difficulty level.

Active Experiences and Culture

Hammelburg’s multi-generation park has a bike park with a pro track for practising new stunts and an asphalt pump track. The pump track is designed for mountain bikes, BMX bikes, scooters and other vehicles, and is also suitable for wheelchair sports. The Saaletalbad at the sports centre offers further options, with a bright, open indoor swimming pool and a 25 m-long stainless-steel pool. Children can enjoy a children’s pool with a slide and play features; the indoor pool and sauna areas are accessible.

Cultural events include the HAMULissimo Church Music Days. They take place every two years over a two-week period in various churches in Hammelburg; admission is mostly free. As the event is not held every year, the best time to plan a visit is when it falls within your travel dates.

A Regional Specialty and the Right Accommodation

Hammelburger Dätscher is a triangular pastry made from savoury rye bread dough and topped with coarse salt and caraway seeds. Bäckerei Schwab, right in Hammelburg’s old town, bakes it fresh daily. Along with the castle, wine and excursions, it gives your plans a specific culinary connection to the town.
