Museums and City History

The museum district in Ravensburg’s Upper Town comprises four museums: the Humpis Quarter Museum, the Art Museum, the Ravensburger Museum and the Economy Museum. Their exhibitions cover a wide range of subjects. If you enjoy visiting different museums during your stay, you’ll find several places to explore within the district.

At the Humpis Quarter Museum, the permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. The museum opened in July 2009. Regular public tours and individually bookable tours are available for school classes, children and adults. You can also make a guided tour part of your museum visit.

The Ravensburg Art Museum opened in 2013 and is the world’s first certified museum built to the Passive House standard. If you want to visit different venues, you can combine the Art Museum with the other museums in the district, where the themes are not limited to a single focus.

Achberg Castle and Life in the Region in Times Past

Achberg Castle is the district cultural center of Ravensburg district. Set high above the Argental, it showcases Baroque architecture and is open to all visitors. There are educational activities for children. On weekends, the castle café serves regional specialties and homemade cakes. Culture, activities for young visitors and a place to stop for refreshments are among the different aspects of a visit to the castle.

The Allgäu-Oberschwaben Farmhouse Museum in Wolfegg offers a different glimpse into the past: it shows how people’s ancestors in the region used to work, live and go about their daily lives. The grounds preserve 28 historic buildings, some of them several centuries old. Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead to the museum. If you’d like to include these trails in your holiday, you can consider Wolfegg as a separate day-trip destination.

Moorland and Hiking Trails

The Pfrunger-Burgweiler Ried covers almost 2,600 hectares and is the second-largest contiguous moorland area in southwestern Germany. Alongside museums and castles, this extensive moorland is another place in the region to explore and enjoy nature.

There are several hiking routes in the Schmalegger Tobel nature reserve, in Ravensburg’s Schmalegg district. The area is about 8 km from Ravensburg city center. You can walk the Tannsberg circular trail as a short or a long loop, depending on your preference. Having a choice of two loops can be useful when planning your day if you want to tailor the route to your preferences. Circular trails also lead from Achberg Castle through the varied landscape: gentle, rolling meadows characterize the high riverbank, while steep slopes and ravines lie along the valley flank of the Argental.

Choose the Right Base

Ravensburg is part of the bodo public transport network. Bus and train connections run within the city and across the region. If you’re especially interested in the museums and views from the towers, you could make Ravensburg a focus of your trip. When planning outings to Achberg Castle, Wolfegg or the moorland, you can take your destinations and interests into account when choosing where to stay. Climbing the Blaserturm in the historic center and the Mehlsack tower offers views across Ravensburg. This gives you the choice of city experiences and regional destinations as different ways to shape your trip.
