Kißlegg: Castle Culture, Moorlands and Water
Accommodation in Kißlegg
Kißlegg combines castle culture with experiences by the water and in moorland landscapes. At the New Castle, you’ll find art and a local history museum; at Obersee, short trips out on the water are among the possible activities. Nature trails, a family recreation area and a GPS-guided audio tour add to the options. When looking for a holiday apartment in Kißlegg, you can consider whether culture, water or nature should be the focus of your stay.
Castles, Art and Local History
Kißlegg New Castle lies in the heart of the town, surrounded by an English-style castle park. It was built between 1721 and 1727 to a design by Füssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer. Today, the castle is a place for art and culture: regular contemporary art exhibitions are held alongside a local history museum. If you’re interested in different aspects of local history and art, you’ll find both in one place here.
The buildings also reflect different periods. The Old Castle on the edge of Lake Zellersee is a Renaissance and Baroque building. Kißlegg’s center is also home to the magnificent Baroque church of St. Gallus and Ulrich, with its Augsburg silver treasure. During your cultural stay, you can explore the history of the castles and sacred architecture separately or together.
The annual calendar includes the Christmas market in and around the New Castle. It takes place every year on the first weekend of Advent. If you’re planning your stay around this market, this is the specific weekend when the castle grounds become the setting for the Christmas market.
Time by the Water and Activities Together
At Kißlegg’s Obersee, the lido offers pedal boats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for short trips out on the water. This gives you several ways to enjoy an active stay by the water. The lido also has a kiosk that is open daily, changing rooms, showers and toilets—practical facilities for a visit to the lake.
From April to October, the St. Anna family recreation area offers a large space with play equipment, an open play field with goals and a water-play area. Benches and tables are available for picnics. If you’d like to use a barbecue area, you can rent the barbecue hut through the tourist and citizens’ office. This lets you plan your outing around play, outdoor activity or a shared break; the facilities mentioned at the recreation area are available from April to October.
Moorland Trails and Nature Experiences
In Burgermoos, close to Kißlegg, a 3.9-kilometer circular trail leads across the moor on wooden boardwalks. Designed as a nature trail, it features hands-on stations and activity areas. If you prefer a guided tour, you can book a natural history tour of Burgermoos through the tourist and citizens’ office. So, there are two options for exploring the moorland: a circular trail or a guided discovery tour.
A few kilometers south of Kißlegg lies Arrisrieder Moos, with its own nature trail. It can be visited at any time of year with suitable footwear; it is particularly appealing during the heather bloom in August. This seasonal feature may influence your choice of travel dates. When planning your holiday, the two moors offer different points of reference: the 3.9-kilometer circular trail in Burgermoos and the dedicated trail in Arrisrieder Moos.
Listen to Kißlegg and Explore
The app-based LAUSCHTOUR guides visitors through Kißlegg using GPS. It is designed as an audio discovery tour of a Baroque gem at the western end of the main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. It starts on the north side of Kißlegg New Castle. Group tours in Kißlegg can be booked through the tourist and citizens’ office at any time, regardless of season or opening hours. If you’d prefer a natural history tour, you can also book the tour of Burgermoos there.
