Achberg brings together remarkable castle art and a landscape shaped by ravines, meadows and the Argen. The Knights’ Hall at Achberg Castle is defined by its stucco ceiling, which weighs 30 tonnes. Four archer figures in the corners of the room aim at a single point in the centre; beneath them is a Janissary. The figures refer to the Teutonic Order’s victories over the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 17th century. In this way, the hall’s design is linked to a historical interpretation that is visible within the room itself.
Achberg Castle and the Flunauer Steg
Below the castle, the 48-metre-long Flunauer Steg suspension bridge crosses the Argen. The bridge and the Knights’ Hall represent two different sides of Achberg: the detailed interior of a room on the one hand, and a bridge across the river on the other. The Argen riverbed, with its shady banks and sandbanks, is a nature reserve.

Circular walking trails from Achberg Castle lead through a varied landscape. It includes gentle, rolling meadows on the high riverbank, as well as steep valley slopes with ravines. Routes around Achberg Castle run mostly along quiet side roads and cycle paths. There is a free service station at the castle for minor bicycle repairs. Several e-bike charging stations are accessible outside opening hours too; check the details before setting off.
Bus connection, art and refreshments
Since 1 June 2026, regional bus route 19 between Wangen and the Gitzenweiler Hof campsite has also run every two hours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It also stops at Achberg Castle. If you plan to use the service, check the timetable before travelling.
Alongside its art exhibitions, Achberg Castle offers guided tours, workshops, courses and bespoke events. Its educational programmes explore aspects of visual art and offer insights into the geology, natural environment and cultural history of the site. The castle café in the Amtshaus serves cheesecake, cream puffs with chocolate ice cream and quiche; the menu may change.
