Waldburg: Castle, Planet Trail and Orchard Meadows
Accommodation in Waldburg
Waldburg can be explored from several angles: one of southern Germany’s best-preserved castle complexes, a trail that takes you on a journey through the planets, and an educational trail featuring various fruit trees give the town its distinctive character. There are also regional products made from apples and pears. You can choose different themes for your stay—from history and puzzles to nature and local delights.

Castle and Puzzles at Waldburg Castle
Waldburg is considered one of southern Germany’s best-preserved castle complexes. The castle also presents the Waldseemüller map as the “birth certificate of America” and as a World Documentary Heritage item. Those interested in historical maps will find a tangible point of reference here; the map’s designation links its presentation to a notable chapter in the history of exploration.
Another way to engage with the castle is the castle rally, in which visitors aged 12 to 99 solve puzzles around the castle. If you’re travelling with children aged 12 or over, you can take this age range into account when choosing activities to enjoy together. For occasions such as birthdays, company outings and corporate celebrations, a knight’s feast is served in the deep vaulted cellar. The focus is on an authentic medieval meal—a distinctive setting for group occasions, rather than simply another castle puzzle.
Planet Trail and Fruit Tree Trail
The Planet Trail starts at the town hall in the centre of town. From there, it follows the main road and Amtzeller Straße, passes through the schoolyard and ends at the observatory. Along the way, information boards describe the respective planets. Those interested in astronomy can combine the walk with information about the planets.
The Waldburg Fruit Tree Trail offers a different theme. It stretches from Hof Sutter, north of Waldburg, to Schädlers Kreuz. Each of its 40 different fruit trees has an information board. For families who enjoy discovering and reading about things along the way, the two trails may appeal to different interests: the Planet Trail and its astronomy theme, or the Fruit Tree Trail and its individual trees.
Orchard Meadows and Local Names
Today, ADRIAN Genussmanufaktur makes high-quality vinegar specialities, fruit juices and sparkling wines from apples and pears grown in Upper Swabian orchard meadows. Visitors can sample a range of ADRIAN products in the producer’s vaulted cellar. This adds a culinary perspective to the nature themes: the focus here is on the fruit and the products made from it. When choosing a holiday apartment or other accommodation, you can consider whether castles and puzzles, the trails or regional products will be the main draw for your trip to Waldburg.
There is also a cultural point of interest in the wider area around Waldburg: four small field chapels are grouped together there. The three old ones are locally known as Hustenkäppele, Grimmen- and Oißenkäppele. These names add locally handed-down terms to the picture of the area, without individually naming all four chapels.
