Bad Wurzach can be explored through two closely connected themes: the Wurzacher Ried and the long history of peat extraction. This history takes centre stage at the Upper Swabian Peat Museum. Peat was cut and used in a variety of ways in Bad Wurzach for more than 200 years. Marked trails, a small peat railway, Baroque buildings and the adventure playground in the spa gardens complete the picture. When choosing a holiday apartment, consider what you want to focus on during your holiday: would you mainly like to spend time outdoors in the moorland, explore cycling routes, or also include architectural and local history?

Peat history and trails in the Wurzacher Ried

The Wurzacher Ried nature reserve offers around 20 kilometres of marked hiking trails on paved and unpaved paths. One shorter, clearly named route is the 1.5-kilometre Torflehrpfad “Auf den Spuren der Torfstecher” (Peat Trail “In the Footsteps of the Peat Cutters”). It starts at the Upper Swabian Peat Museum, and its name reflects the moor’s former use. For your planning, you can allow for the 1.5-kilometre peat trail starting at the Upper Swabian Peat Museum. Check local notices for temporary closures before setting out.

At Riedsee, you can walk barefoot through a natural moor area via a set of steps. A Kneipp wading pool is located nearby on the Wurzacher Ach. Both are along Moor Hiking Trail No. 1, so they can be associated with the same named route. Please follow the notices on site at the natural moor area.

The historic peat railway also runs through the Wurzacher Ried. Its route follows old narrow-gauge tracks on a newly laid, roughly 1.5-kilometre line. The stated operating schedule runs from April to October: services are scheduled for the second Sunday and fourth Saturday of each month. Check the latest operating information before your visit before relying on this schedule for your plans.

This gives you a choice of several selected routes starting in Bad Wurzach, as well as one route with a specifically named destination and return leg. Check the latest route information before setting off.

Baroque heritage, therapy history and a playground

The town’s history also includes preserved Baroque buildings. In Bad Wurzach, the Baroque staircase in the castle and the pilgrimage church on Gottesberg are among the important Baroque buildings. The former Maria Rosengarten monastery includes a Rococo chapel. These buildings offer a different focus from the peat history and trails in the Ried.

Bad Wurzach’s moorland is also linked to a long history of therapy: since 1936, it has been used there as a healing and restorative form of therapy. There is an adventure playground in Bad Wurzach spa gardens where children can play, climb and swing. The town’s offerings therefore include not only natural and cultural attractions, but also a specific play area for children.
