The royal silk manufactory of Pont d’Ucel was established in 1752 at the initiative of the renowned mechanic Jacques Vaucanson and its director Henri Deydier. It was the first silk factory of its kind and served as a model for silk-spinning mills in the Ardèche and beyond, throughout France and as far as Spain. In Ucel, the silk industry led to the establishment of factories on the banks of the Ardèche.
