Nature and Trails
The Circuit d'Eyriac – N°2 starts and ends at the Place de la Mairie in Dornas. The circular route is 6 km long and has 277 metres of elevation gain; it also descends into the Dorne valley.
The Circuit de Molines – N°3 is a difficult circular hike covering 9.2 km, with a duration of 3 hours 30 minutes, 397 m of ascent and a maximum altitude of 946 m. At the same time, the Circuit de Molines – N°3 is a sporty 9 km hiking trail that crosses a stone bridge over the Grand Dornas stream.
Dornas can also be explored by mountain bike: the Le Bois de Graveyron – VTT FFC N°6 Noir route starts and ends at the Place de la Fontaine in Dornas and leads to the Champel ruins.
Water on the Dorne
The Plan d'eau in Dornas is a man-made body of water on the Dorne. Supervised swimming is available there, as well as three paddleboards for children. The Plan d'eau also has a playground, a picnic area and a snack bar; a campsite is located nearby.
Below the Plan d'eau de la Gandole, the rocks at the Pont du Salin are shaped and polished by the powerful flow of gravel carried along by the water. Impressive “marmites de géants” can be found there.
History and Traces
The La Châtelaine spring is linked to a history of its own. Operations to extract La Châtelaine mineral water in Dornas began in 1920 and ended in 1992. As early as 1906, the mill operators Riou and Dejoux submitted the first application to exploit the La Châtelaine spring; this application led to an agreement in 1907.
In 1945, the Dussaud family from Bois-Lantal (Chanéac) bought the La Châtelaine spring, carried out extensive work and leased it to the Curiniers brothers (Chanéac). The spring produced 500,000 litres per year.
Further traces of the local past can be found in various places: An old bridge in Dornas has been documented since 1348. The bread oven in the hamlet of Molines was restored by the hamlet's residents in 2004.
