Nature

The Bouches-du-Rhône département has more than 18,000 hectares distributed across around 30 domains. These include various protected and scenic areas: Île Verte is integrated into the classified Cap Canaille area and the Calanques National Park. The island lies 400 metres from the mainland and has a diverse fauna and flora. The Sainte-Victoire Nature Reserve is a 140-hectare national nature reserve. In the Grands-Creux sector of this protected area is a palaeontological site containing dinosaur eggs.

The other natural areas also display different forms of landscape. The Alpilles have an extensive network of trails suitable for hiking, horse riding and cycling. The Camargue Regional Nature Park offers 14 hiking routes. In the Calanques National Park, walking along the trails is the best way to discover the park’s terrestrial side.

Trails and Water

Within the département, the Calanques National Park is a terrestrial and marine park covering an area of 520 square kilometres and extending across Marseille, Cassis and La Ciotat. There are no water points in the Calanques; the park recommends taking at least 1.5 litres of water per person for a half-day excursion. The Mes Calanques app offers 20 geolocated walking and hiking routes and allows users to track their progress along the trails.

The Route des Crêtes is accessible from Cassis and La Ciotat and has several viewpoints with car parks. The Calanque de Port-Miou can be reached on foot from the centre of Cassis in around 30 minutes via the GR58-51. Port-Miou serves as an easy-access nautical base with a sailing club and a harbour master's office. The GR98-51 provides access to the Calanque de Port-Pin and the Calanque d’En-Vau. Sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are described as ways to travel along the coast and enter the Calanques. From the sea, the Calanques can be visited by shuttles departing from Marseille’s Vieux-Port.

Culture and Cuisine

Regional culture includes the Course camarguaise, which is practised in the Bouches-du-Rhône département from March to November. The culinary traditions of the coast include bottarga, sardines and sea urchins. Camargue rice has been recognised as an IGP since December 2013.
