Culture

The first episcopal complex on the site of today’s Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur dates back to the 5th century; it was preceded by the ancient Roman forum, which was built in the 1st century BC in the centre of Aquae Sextiae.

The Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur combines three naves in different architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.

The Fontaine de l’Hôtel de Ville was built in 1756 and classified as a historic monument in 1905.

The Pavillon de Vendôme was classified as a historic monument in 1914; its garden was classified in 1953. The pavilion also houses a museum illustrating the furnishings of the Aix-en-Provence hôtels particuliers of the Grand Siècle.

On the ground floor of the Fondation Vasarely, sixteen modules with hexagonal floor plans display 42 monumental architectural integrations and two sculptures. The Fondation Vasarely is classified as a historic monument and has been recognised as a Musée de France since 10 December 2020.

The Musée Granet displays around 750 works ranging from the early masters and the Renaissance to modern and contemporary art. It has two rooms dedicated to Paul Cézanne.

The Musée Granet regularly hosts international exhibitions and offers multilingual guided tours, educational activities and a dynamic cultural programme.
