Graveson: Art, Gardens and Holiday Apartments

The Musée de Région Auguste Chabaud was opened in 1992 in honour of the artist, who spent most of his life in Graveson. The Via Agrippa near Graveson was built from the 1st century BC and rebuilt in the 1st century AD; it connected Lyon with Arles. A particularly well-preserved section of this ancient road has been restored and is open to the public. At the site, a 30-metre-long educational mural and explanatory panels describe the archaeological finds.

Culture

The Grand Portail was the village’s main entrance on the western side and is considered a symbol of the Middle Ages in Graveson. Today, it houses an exhibition space about Graveson’s twinning partnership with Thônex in Switzerland. La roubine is a preserved remnant of the medieval defensive moat of the town of Graveson and is located on the tree-lined Cours in Graveson.

La Maison des arts is located in the heart of the village of Graveson. It has an exhibition space with picture rails and display cases, as well as a room for workshops. The Romanesque choir of the Eglise Notre Dame de la Nativité de Marie is listed as a historic monument; the church also contains paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Since 2005, the Pictural & Mural initiative has promoted public art by providing artists with three public exterior walls for their work. Today, more than 20 murals from the collection can be viewed in Graveson. The murals by Pictural & Mural are inaugurated on the first Sunday in September during Graveson’s Fête votive.

Nature

The Jardin des Quatre Saisons is a free public garden that is open daily. It is divided into four areas representing the four seasons. The Piémont area near Graveson, which belongs to the Montagnette, covers 300 hectares of land owned by the town of Graveson.

The Montagnette is a limestone massif forming the natural boundary between the Rhône and Durance valleys. Two thirds of the massif are covered with Aleppo pines; its flora includes olive trees, thyme, farigoule, savory, rosemary and fennel. The Jardin Aquatique “Aux Fleurs de l'Eau” features three waterfalls that feed around fifteen pools with aquatic plants, as well as a collection of koi carp.

Experiences

The Marché Paysan in Graveson is a visitor attraction centred around the colours, aromas and quality of wonderful and delicious local produce. The Terre de Provence cycling loops include the 17-kilometre Route No. 5, “Au fil de l’eau”, which runs from Graveson to Rognonas.

The Fête de la Saint Eloi in Graveson takes place on the last weekend of July. The Saint-Eloi tradition in Graveson includes cavalcades with the “carreto ramado”, a cart decorated with greenery; in other municipalities, this cart is decorated with grain.
