Culture and History

The Église Saint-Sylvestre is classified as a historic monument; the classification was made by decree on 28 September 1958. The Marian altarpiece was classified as a protected object on 30 December 1982. The tomb shows a reclining male figure with a dog.

The organ of West-Cappel is a very rare example of an organ dating from the 16th and 17th centuries that has been preserved in its original condition. At the same time, it is an important example of Flemish organ building.

The origins of the Château de la Briarde date back to the 15th century. The Château de la Briarde was remodelled at the end of the 18th century and completely renovated around the middle of the 19th century. It is surrounded by moats and has an English landscape garden.

West-Cappel has preserved a high-quality bocage landscape with a semi-open hedgerow character. Thus, alongside the historic architectural and decorative details, the characteristic landscape forms of the village are also part of the described townscape.

Routes

The “En Quête de West-Cappel” route begins at the church car park on Place Francis Cousin and uses the Route de l’Yser.

The Hondschoote–Rexpoëde–West-Cappel–Warhem circular route enters West-Cappel via the Route de l’Yser. After entering West-Cappel, the circular route continues along the Route de l’Yser, turns into the Rue du contour de l’église, and leads to the car park.
