The Carnaval de Cassel has been included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2008. During the Cassel Carnival on Easter Monday, Reuze Papa is accompanied by Reuze Maman. The original figures of the giants of Cassel are kept at the Musée Départemental de Flandre; copies take part in the carnival.

Culture

The Musée de Flandre is located on the Grand’Place in Cassel, in the Hôtel de la Noble Cour, a building protected as a historic monument. Its thematically organized permanent exhibition presents Flemish art from the 15th century to the present day. The Musée de Flandre bears the Tourisme & Handicap label and is designated as accessible to all.

History

The Chapelle des Jésuites was built between 1620 and 1687. The Collégiale Notre-Dame de la Crypte has been classified as a historic monument since 22 December 1981 and has been documented since the 10th century. The Hôtel Mac Mahon is considered the oldest house in Cassel, dates from 1631 and bears witness to traditional Flemish architecture.

The Moulin de l'Etendard is a wooden post mill that already existed in the 14th century and witnessed the Second Battle of Cassel in 1328.

Landscapes

At 176 metres, Mont Cassel is the highest of the Flemish hills mentioned. Cassel has viewing tables; in clear weather, the views extend across the valleys for up to 80 km.

The Jardin du mont des Récollets is a Mannerist garden inspired by Flemish design, with topiary and planted garden rooms, and is open to visitors. It has received the Qualité Tourisme and Jardin Remarquable distinctions.

Walks and Mills

The “Cassel, par rues et ruelles” walking route begins at the Grand’Place in Cassel. It is accessible year-round, suitable for families and presents no particular difficulties; it is also aimed at those interested in history and heritage.

The Moulin de Cassel can be reached on foot via Rue du Château and by car or coach via Place Vandamme. It opens its doors on some weekends during the year. During a visit to the Moulin Casteel-Meulen, guests can learn about its history and traditional mechanism.

Cuisine

The Brasserie du Mont Cassel offers tours of its production facilities and insights into local brewing; visitors can then taste beers produced on site. A Flemish estaminet in Cassel lists Carbonade flamande, Welsh, Potjevleesch and Tarte au Maroilles among its dishes.
