Dunkerque: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Musée maritime et portuaire houses almost 40,000 objects illustrating Dunkerque’s maritime heritage and the development of shipping, local boats and the professions associated with them. At the same time, the museum invites visitors on a journey through almost four centuries of maritime history – from Iceland to Cape Horn and along the coasts of Africa and Asia.

Culture

The LAAC preserves more than 2,500 works of art from 1945 to 1980, which are placed in dialogue with contemporary art. Every year, the museum offers a programme of exhibitions and events designed to promote interaction between the public and art. The LAAC also includes a sculpture garden that is open to everyone.

The Halle aux Sucres is housed in a former port warehouse and serves as a centre of expertise and resources dedicated to the topic of the sustainable city. Exhibitions, workshops and conferences take place there throughout the year. During the school holidays, guided tours for groups on various topics are offered daily, including Operation Dynamo in Dunkerque.

Towers and Harbour

The Beffroi de Saint Eloi offers 360-degree views over Dunkerque, the harbour and the beach. The tower also has a carillon with 50 bells.

The Phare du Risban offers views of the harbour and the city of Dunkerque, as well as the Flemish plain. The cylindrical tower is 63 metres high, and its lantern can be reached via 276 steps. On the ground floor, the former lighthouse keepers’ living quarters contain exhibition rooms on maritime signalling.

Free shuttle buses connect Dunkerque city centre and railway station with the Halle aux Sucres at Môle 1. They depart every 10 minutes.

Events

The Carnaval de Dunkerque lasts three months. Its highlight is Mardi Gras week.
