Gironville-sur-Essonne is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du Gâtinais Français. The Essonne runs through the town and divides there into several branches.

Culture and history

At the Ferme du Vignay, the sheepfold is the protected part; it was listed by an order dated 23 February 1981. The estate is partly listed as a monument historique, and its main construction phase dates back to the first half of the 16th century.

The Église Saint-Pierre in Gironville-sur-Essonne is listed as a monument historique. Its porch features a comb gable; this is the only example of its kind mentioned in Essonne and, at the same time, a very rare example in Île-de-France. The church has two bell towers, the older of which dates from the late 11th century.

Traces dating back to the 9th century have been documented in Gironville-sur-Essonne; at that time, the town was known as Gisoni Villa. In 1900, the Moulin de Vicq was one of four mills recorded in Gironville-sur-Essonne.

Landscape and trails

The “Au coeur du Gâtinais français” cycling loop leads to Gironville-sur-Essonne and then follows the path along the Essonne to the mill. The hiking route from Maisse to Malesherbes leads to the former mill site, follows the Essonne and then leaves Gironville-sur-Essonne in the direction of Buno-Bonnevaux.

Geographical setting

The area around Gironville-sur-Essonne is home to the Cyclop monument, Mont Pivot hill, Mont Rouget hill and the historic site of Abbaye Notre-Dame de Villiers-aux-Nonnains.

The wider regional area includes the Caverne des Brigands cave, Rocher de Dame Jouanne hill, Château de Vignay and Château de Fortoiseau.
