Arro: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Arro is a village with a distinctly medieval character, situated on a hillside, whose appearance is defined by houses made of pink granite and narrow, steep lanes. In 1489, the village was abandoned following the repression of the Office of Saint George carried out by Ambroggio de Negro, the Doge of Genoa.

History and Architectural Heritage

The Church of Saint Nicholas reflects important construction phases, presumably from the 17th century as well as the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its elongated floor plan comprises a nave covered by a semicircular barrel vault, side aisles with groin vaults, and a semicircular apse. The bell tower contains a bell that, according to its inscription, was cast by Ferri in 1890. The church also houses the painting “Vierge à l'Enfant entre saint Nicolas et saint Cyr”.

San-Chirgo is of medieval origin and is the former parish church of Saint Cyr in Arro. Today, it serves as the burial chapel of the Colonna family. The historic San Chirgu path led to the village of Arro; on the opposite bank of the Liamone stood the main residence of the Da Leca, the regional lords.

Townscape and Landscape

The Type 1 ZNIEFF “Gorges du Liamone en amont du pont de Truggia” is located in the municipality of Arro. Arro can be reached at the end of a road offering views of the surrounding peaks and the Liamone Valley. The Grotte des Bandit Spada is a visitor destination in Arro.

Paths and Routes

Arro can be explored on foot via narrow lanes lined with steps and small squares. In Arro, abandoned cultivation terraces, small gardens, and dry-stone walls remain visible as elements of the former rural landscape. Activities in Arro include walks through the lanes and to viewpoints overlooking Cinarca. Arro is also a stopping point on routes for discovering the villages along the Liamone and the roads inland.

The hike to the Grotte des Bandit Spada takes 30 minutes and begins at the edge of the village along the path from Lopigna. Two named routes also include Arro: the “SA Casaglione à Pastricciola” route (No. 9) includes a section of road in Arro heading towards Lopigna. The “Arro à Bocca U Verghju par Bocca U Peru” route runs from Arro towards Sari d'Orcino.
