Culture
The former agricultural penal colony of Mettray was listed as a historic monument on September 11, 2003. La Paternelle, an agricultural penal colony, was founded in 1839 to rehabilitate young offenders through agricultural work. The writer Jean Genet stayed at La Paternelle.
The Maison paternelle de Mettray opened in 1855. The institution, which was separate from the penal colony, took in disobedient children from wealthy families under the system of “correction paternelle”.
The partially protected Château du Petit Bois includes the château, the barn, the so-called tenant farmer’s house, the stables, and the park.

Nature
The Choisille Valley is one of Mettray’s three terrain units, alongside the plateau and a flattened slope. Since 2011, it has been recognized as a green and blue ecological network of heritage interest.
Activities
Mettray has the 8.8 km-long Sentier de la Grotte aux Fées hiking trail. The Ecuries de la Choisille offer riding lessons, training courses, and competitions for all skill levels.
The 4Heures de Mettray is an endurance mountain bike race in which participants can compete individually, in pairs, or in teams of three.
