Pontgouin: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Pontgouin’s historic landmarks include the Écluses de Boizard. They are classified as historic monuments, were built by Vauban, and form the starting point of the Canal Louis XIV. This canal ran from Pontgouin to Maintenon and was intended to carry water to the Palace of Versailles; however, it was never completed.

Culture

Construction of the Église Saint-Lubin dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. During an extension in the 16th century, a side aisle with four bays was added for the parishioners.

The Ferme du Plessis has been documented since 1219; it is part of a tourist trail of fortified farmhouses. A commemorative plaque identifies the Maison natale du Cardinal Pie as the birthplace of Cardinal Pie. The Menhir du Vaugelay is a 4.50-metre-long megalithic monument.

Nature

The ZNIEFF 240000001 in Pontgouin encompasses alder and willow forests, oak-hornbeam forests, a marshy mesotrophic meadow, reed canary grass stands, and a fishing pond near the Eure. Wetland insect species and regionally protected plant species have been recorded in this area.

Trails and Water

The 160-kilometre GR® de pays Vallée de l’Eure long-distance hiking trail runs from Anet to La Loupe and through Pontgouin; in Pontgouin, it passes by the Château de la Rivière. The Château de la Rivière is a well-preserved building in the style of Louis XIII; it includes a well-preserved 18th-century dovecote.

Fishing is possible at the Étang des Abysses in Pontgouin with prior reservation. The Moulin de Boizard offers a fishing area dedicated exclusively to fly fishing, with a river and canal course fed by the Eure, as well as a 1.5-hectare fishing pond.
