Houx: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Along the Canal de Gallardon, also known as the Canal Louis XIV, the route of an older canal, built in the Middle Ages, runs through a large part of the municipality of Houx. One of the five or six locks was located at the Moulin de Houx. A partially filled-in excavation and surviving limestone wall remains still indicate the site.

Culture and History

The Chapelle Saint-Mamert dates from the 11th century and was founded by Benedictine monks from the Saint-Thomas d'Epernon priory. It is located in the part of the hamlet of Saint-Mamert that belongs to the municipality of Houx. The church of Houx was completely restored in 2008 and 2009. During the work, the bell tower was reconstructed, a panelled barrel vault was installed, and art glass windows made using the thermoforming process were fitted.

The former windmill of Houx is also one of the site's historical traces. Today it is a ruin; it was once a tower windmill with a rotating roof for aligning the mechanism with the wind. Today, only the residential building and the large granary with its passage gate remain of La Bergerie. Of the Seigneurial Farm, one wing with a residential building, sheds and an adjoining large granary with the oldest foundation remains, as well as the bakehouse, have survived.

The existence of the seigneurial mill subject to compulsory use in Houx has been documented since at least the 14th century. The buildings of this mill date predominantly from the 17th and 18th centuries. A patronal festival was held in Houx until the 1950s and traditionally marked the end of the harvest on 30 August.

Getting There and Annual Cycle

Houx can be reached by train via Maintenon station, which is located in the vicinity of the town centre. The C.P.C.F. continues to organise a flea market in Houx in autumn.
