Saint-Arnoult-Des-Bois: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Arche à Mulet marks the course of the Canal Louis XIV in Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois. The stone structure carried the canal over an embankment; the Coisnon stream flows underneath it. The arch is 30 metres long, 2 metres wide and 2 metres high. The preserved structures of the Canal Louis XIV at the Arche à Mulet are presented to walkers as remains to be discovered. In Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois, the 32-kilometre “Royal Canal” cycling loop also passes near the arch. Work on the Canal Louis XIV began between 1685 and 1688 and was abandoned in 1694. It was intended to supply the Palace of Versailles with water.

Culture

Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois is home to the Romanesque Église Saint-Arnoult church. At Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois Communal Cemetery, in the churchyard opposite the church’s west portal, there is a communal grave for two members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Pilot Officer William Gracie served in 433 Sqdn. of the Royal Canadian Air Force, died on 5 July 1944 and is listed in this communal grave.

History

In 1117, Goinville had a church dedicated to Saint Arnoul. The name Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois first appears in a document from 1390. Goinville is apparently considered the birthplace of Saint-Arnoult-des-Bois; the early name “Gaudeni-villa” is associated with Roman origins.
