Chateaudun: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Château de Châteaudun in the Eure-et-Loir département is known for its donjon and its 15th-century Sainte Chapelle. The circular donjon is 31 metres high, has a diameter of 17 metres and is considered one of the best-preserved of its kind. A guided tour of the Château de Châteaudun includes the covered way, the battlements and the medieval garden reconstructed in the early 2000s.

Culture

The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Histoire Naturelle also combines different themes: among other things, it presents ancient Egypt, Japanese katagamis, the Dunois’s fight against the Prussians in 1870 and an ornithological collection.

History and Townscape

The circular route through the historic centre of Châteaudun begins at the Place du 18 octobre and introduces the new town rebuilt in the 18th century after the great fire of 1723. The former Eglise de la Madeleine de Châteaudun is part of the older building fabric; its construction dates back to the mid-12th century. The Eglise Saint-Valérien de Châteaudun is a Romanesque church from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Nature and Trails

The Tour de l'Ile de Chemars is an accessible circular trail at the foot of the Château de Châteaudun. It follows the banks of the Loir and offers views of the rocky promontory with the Château as well as former watermills. The Sentier nature du bois des Gâts runs through the municipal forest and provides access to a ravine forest, a hibernation area for bats and wetland habitats along the banks of the Loir. Le Bois des Gâts covers 23 hectares in the heart of an area protected as a Natura 2000 site.

Under the town centre lie the Grottes du Foulon, large limestone caves naturally formed by water millions of years ago. They cover more than 10,000 m² and display quartz and chalcedony geodes. The Grottes du Foulon can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Châteaudun is also located along the Loir à Vélo cycle routes.
