Auneau combines a château with structural elements from the 14th, 16th and 18th centuries, a prehistoric site and the Étangs d'Auneau ponds, which offer specific leisure activities.
Culture and History
The Château d'Auneau includes a cylindrical 11th-century keep. Its main building combines structural elements from the 14th, 16th and 18th centuries; the tower has been listed as a historic monument since 7 November 1927.
The Parc du Château in Auneau-Bleury-Saint-Symphorien is home to a prehistoric site that was inhabited from 8000 to 3500 BC. There, the Jardin de la Préhistoire offers an archaeological and botanical tour through a reed bed on the banks of the Aunay. The Maison circulaire d’Auneau is an important discovery for understanding Neolithic dwellings.
The Church of Saint-Rémy dates from the 11th century and is located in the hamlet of Saint-Rémy. It was built above the Saint-Maur spring, which was a pilgrimage site until the beginning of the 20th century.
Nature and Activities
The Étangs d'Auneau comprise two ponds: Les Aulnes, covering 2 hectares, and Fontaine à Jean, covering 2.5 hectares. The ponds feature outdoor games, picnic benches and a table-tennis table. Fishing is possible, and the site is suitable for a family weekend.
The Parcours de santé features 13 wooden fitness stations and is 3.8 kilometres long. It begins behind the Grange Marchand at the Étangs d'Auneau.
Other local destinations include Baudreville, Saint-Lubin-de-la-Haye, Ardelu, Boncourt, La Puisaye, Béthonvilliers, Pontgouin and Nogent-le-Roi.
