Sérent: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Sérent combines signposted mountain biking trails, protected moorlands, and impressive evidence of Breton cultural history. Between the Tourbière de Kerfontaine, the Tourbière de Sérent, and historic chapels, there are many opportunities for active days and cultural discoveries.

Activities

The Base VTT des Landes de Lanvaux comprises 173 kilometers of mountain biking routes of varying lengths and difficulty, all of which are fully signposted; 55 kilometers of them run through Sérent. Another specific route is the 19-kilometer Circuit de Tromeur, which is intended for mountain biking, hiking, and horse riding. The circular route also passes the Moulin à eau de Marsac watermill site.

For walks, the Bois de la Salle offers opportunities within Sérent. In addition to the longer routes, shorter paths through the local landscape are therefore also a focus.

Nature

The Tourbière de Kerfontaine has been managed by Bretagne Vivante since 1982. It is considered the last significant area for representative moorland species in eastern Morbihan and the Massif des Landes de Lanvaux.

The Tourbière de Sérent is a 22-hectare municipal protected area, classified as an “Espace Naturel Sensible” and also managed by Bretagne Vivante. Together, the two moorlands give the landscape of Sérent a clearly recognizable natural and wetland character.

Culture and History

The Monument du Maquis is a granite monument to the Breton Resistance. It stands near a parachute drop zone that had already been approved in February 1943.

The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien, together with its monumental cross, was built at the end of the 15th century. Its cemetery contains the graves of the paratroopers Roger Vautelin from Joinville-le-Pont and Lieutenant Louis Arcille from New York, known respectively as “François Mariani” and “Mariani.” Both were killed during the battle on June 21, 1944. The cemetery and the exterior of the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien can be viewed year-round.

The Église Saint-Pierre in Sérent dates mainly from the 15th century and the transition from the 15th to the 16th century; the year 1601 is also recorded as a construction date. Visitor guides are available for the church. Its stained-glass windows depict traditional subjects such as the Last Supper and rarer motifs such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Chapelle Sainte-Suzanne contains a gilded polychrome wooden statue of Saint Anne with the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, dating from the late 16th century. Frescoes cover the walls of its nave. Sérent’s architectural heritage also includes the 15th-century Manoir de la Salle. The sacred heritage is complemented by an exhibition of sacred vestments from the Sérent parish, on display in Sérent.
