Saint-Jacques was traditionally shaped mainly by seafaring families. To this day, the village’s harbour, festivals and waterfront activities reflect this maritime history.

Culture

The summer market takes place in Saint-Jacques from the last Monday in June to the first Monday in September. It stretches along rue du port St Jacques and rue des Plaisanciers. There you will find food vendors such as vegetable growers, fruit and vegetable sellers, barbecue vendors, crêpe stalls and fishmongers.

One of Saint-Jacques’ own festivals was the Fête de la mer. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Port de Saint-Jacques was shaped first by coastal trade and subsequently by fishing.

History

The nearby Chapelle Saint-Jacques in Trévenaste was built in 1742. It is said to have reused stones from the Couvent Saint-Jacques and is in a dilapidated condition.

Nature

The Saint-Jacques district is surrounded by two sandy coves. Plage de Saint-Jacques is considered the smallest beach in Sarzeau and the beach with the finest sand in Sarzeau.

Activities

The La Grée site in Saint-Jacques is open for sailing during the summer season. In summer, a sailing club offers activities at Plage de Saint-Jacques. Base de Saint-Jacques offers paddleboard and kayak rentals.

The Port de Saint-Jacques has 365 berths in the harbour and at offshore moorings. Fishers’ crates containing whiting, sea bass, conger eels, red mullet and prawns can still be found at the port.

Walking routes

The circular route “Vue sur l'océan – Variante par Saint-Jacques Suscinio” follows the harbour to Pointe de Saint-Jacques and then returns to the starting car park, which is 500 m away. The start of the circular route can be reached by bus.
