Port-Louis: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Port-Louis combines a distinctive fortress history with coastal landscapes around the Rade de Lorient. The Citadelle de Port-Louis was built from 1591 onwards under the direction of Cristobal de Rojas on a rocky promontory at the entrance to the Rade de Lorient. It stands on a steep rocky slope and offers views of Île de Groix, pointe de Gâvres and Larmor-Plage.

History and Culture

The fortress houses the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes. The Musée national de la Marine in Port-Louis displays a significant collection of boats, old navigational instruments and historical models. The exhibition tour also includes an area on the history of sea rescue, as well as a section on ships that sank on the India route.

The town’s historical character also includes its religious and military heritage: the Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption was founded in 1657 by the Duke de la Meilleraye, governor of Port-Louis, and his wife, Marie de Cossé-Brissac. The Grande Poudrière was used to store powder for the land batteries and for ships calling at Port-Louis. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre was built in 1553, destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1859.

Coastal Landscapes

Plage du Lohic lies between the fortification walls of Port-Louis and the port of Locmalo, overlooking Gâvres. It is easily accessible on foot from the centre of Port-Louis. Below the fortification walls is Grande Plage, with beach huts and views of the Rade de Lorient.

The Circuit du haut des remparts à la Petite Mer de Gâvres offers views of the Rade and the Petite Mer de Gâvres.

Nature and Water Sports

The Observatoire du plancton also offers gentle collecting along the coast and the opportunity to explore the coastline at low tide. In Port-Louis, you can enjoy catamaran sailing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
