Culture and history
The Horloge Astronomique in Ploërmel has 200 gears that control ten dials and the solar system. It was built between 1850 and 1855 by Brother Bernardin.
The Eglise Saint-Armel was built between 1511 and 1602 in the Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its distinctive architectural features include a richly decorated north portal, an imposing square tower and numerous gargoyles.
The Espace muséographique La Mennais comprises a museum dedicated to Jean-Marie de La Mennais and a natural history museum. Its collections include insects, bird nests, rocks, fossils and prehistoric tools.
The Micro-Folie de Ploërmel is a digital museum that presents works from numerous national and international museums in very high resolution. It is housed in the Couvent des Carmélites, a historic site that was restored in 2023. The Parcours Métiers d’Art et Culture invites visitors in Ploërmel to discover artists’ studios, craft workshops and boutiques while strolling around.
Nature
The Circuit des Hortensias in Ploërmel is unique in France, stretches for 3 km and invites visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll and botanical discovery.
The wetlands around Lac au Duc provide a habitat for numerous animal species, including insects, otters, frogs and deer.
Trails
Voie Verte n°3 connects Médréac with Questembert, runs through central Brittany and provides access to Ploërmel. Between Mauron and Questembert, 52 kilometres of a former railway line have been fully secured and developed for non-motorised activities.
