In Malestroit, the protected area registered on 26 February 1971 encompasses the entire former town within the town walls, Île Notre-Dame, the left bank of the Oust from Pont neuf onwards, and a section of the canal behind the lock. Île Notre-Dame is surrounded by the Oust River.

Landscape

The Nantes–Brest Canal, which runs through Malestroit, forms part of a 390-kilometre, secured cycle path from Châteaulin to Nantes.

In summer, the Malestroit canoe and kayak club rents kayaks for outings on the water lasting from one day to a full day. Behind the lock is the Maison de l’eau et de la pêche, a museum with four large aquariums.

Culture and History

Le Pass’temps comprises several buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century and provides access to exhibition rooms and an auditorium. The Chapelle de la Madeleine, with its example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, is also one of the town’s notable cultural monuments.

At the Maison à boutique, dite de la Truie qui file, 3, place du Bouffay; 38, rue du Général-de-Gaulle, the façades and roofs were placed under protection as historic monuments by decree of 17 October 1923.

The former market halls at Place du Bouffay, which have since disappeared, were once a trading and sales venue for salt from the salt marshes of Guérande, leather tanned downstream from the town, and cloth and textiles woven in Malestroit and the surrounding area.

Markets

Malestroit’s weekly markets offer fresh produce and local specialities in the historic centre. Malestroit’s Saturday market features fruit and vegetables, butcher’s products, fish and cheese.
