Plage des Grands Sables is one of the few convex beaches in Europe and the only migrating beach of its kind. Within two years, it shifted by 160 metres.

Nature

The François Le Bail Nature Reserve on Groix can be visited independently via the coastal path all year round. Throughout the year and during school holidays, the reserve team also organises nature and discovery excursions.

In the immediate vicinity of Groix are Île de Groix, an island, and Plage les Grands Sables, a beach. The surrounding area of Groix also includes Plage de Kerguélen and Plage de Larmor, both beaches.

Culture

Musée de Groix is a social history museum dedicated to the heritage and history of life in an island community. The écomusée de l'île de Groix is located in the former Romieux cannery, which was built in 1863 for tuna and sardines.

Festival International du Film Insulaire de Groix was founded on Île de Groix and takes place every year towards the end of summer, around 20 August. It combines film, music and debates with sculpture and painting exhibitions focusing on the cultures of the islands.

Menhir de Kermario is an ancient site in the immediate vicinity of Groix. The surrounding area of Groix also includes Fort de Locqueltas, Citadelle de Port-Louis and Fort-Bloqué, all forts.

Island

The year-round ferries operated by BreizhGo Océane from Lorient carry passengers, bicycles, cars and other vehicles. They are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Coast and activities

Base nautique de l'Ile de Groix in the Bay of Port-Mélite offers kayaking and canoe excursions as well as sunset trips from May to September. In summer, from July to August, sailing and other board sports are also available.

Plage des Grands Sables has a lifeguard station, nearby sanitary facilities and seasonal water sports in July and August. At Parcabout® Chien Noir, adults and children move together above the ground on large trampolines.

Food and drink

By appointment, Groix Haliotis offers tours of a closed abalone farm with a tasting of terrine made from abalone from Groix. Groix & Nature offers a free, immersive tour of its production workshop in Port-Lay. From the boutique, the workshop can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes or by bicycle in about 5 minutes.
