The Canal d’Ille-et-Rance crosses Saint-Médard-sur-Ille through the centre of the municipality for just over five kilometres. To the southeast of Saint-Médard-sur-Ille, the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance runs through the valley of the Ille. In Saint-Médard-sur-Ille, you can go walking and fishing along the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance. Voie verte No. 2 is a cycle path along the Canal d’Ille-et-Rance and runs through Saint-Médard-sur-Ille.

Trails

The discovery trail starting in Saint-Médard-sur-Ille is 7 km long and has 16 markers. It starts at the former bakery, leads through the village and then continues along the canal and through wooded sections to the Bouessay lock.

Saint-Médard-sur-Ille is a stage on the Way of St James, more precisely the Chemin du Mont Saint-Michel, Voie des capitales.

Culture

The parish church of Saint-Médard was largely rebuilt in 1752, probably reusing parts of the former church. It has a 17th-century southern portal and a sundial dated 1656.

The Fournil de la rue du Fournil is a 19th-century earthen building constructed using the local Bauge building technique. The Darancel cross is one of the four local crosses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Chapelle Sainte Anne des Bateliers is part of Saint-Médard-sur-Ille’s local heritage and can be visited.

The Pardon des Bateliers takes place every year in July.

History

The Château du Bois Geffroy was probably built as a feudal castle in the 11th century. Today, only five towers are visible; two have been partially demolished and one completely demolished. Parts of the fortification walls have also been preserved.
