Montfort-Sur-Meu: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Montfort-sur-Meu lies at the confluence of the Meu and Garun rivers and is a Petite Cité de Caractère® with preserved cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. From the historic centre, interpretation trails and hiking paths follow the Meu to the edge of the forest.

Culture and History

The Tour du Papegaut is the best-preserved part of the castle of Montfort-sur-Meu. It was probably built by Raoul VII at the end of the 14th century and completed in the following century. Together with the surviving town walls, the tower was added to the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques in 1926.

The history of the Abbaye Saint-Jacques de Montfort also goes back a long way: its foundation stone was laid on 1 March 1152 by Guillaume de Montfort, the grandson of the town's founder. The abbey, rebuilt several times, successively housed Augustinian monks until the Revolution, Ursuline nuns until 1911, and Montfort Fathers until the 1960s. Today, it is home to a technical vocational school.

The 17th-century Couvent des Ursulines lost its original function after the Revolution. It was first converted into a district court and subsequently into a school; for more than a century, the building has housed the town hall of Montfort-sur-Meu. The Eglise Saint-Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort stands at one of the highest points in the town, on the site of the ruined keep of Montfort-sur-Meu.

The Musée-de-France collection of Montfort-sur-Meu comprises art, craft, historical and ethnographic objects collected in the area over around forty years. It is used for temporary local or regional exhibitions, as well as for historical and heritage-related publications.

Getting Around

The TER station in Montfort-sur-Meu connects the town with Rennes city centre in less than 20 minutes. For cyclists, the cycle route known as V6 connects Iffendic, Montfort-sur-Meu and Talensac.

The greenway between Iffendic, Montfort-sur-Meu and Talensac is reserved for sustainable mobility. It can be used on foot, by bicycle, in a wheelchair, on skates, rollerblades, a scooter or with a pushchair.

Local Life

A weekly market takes place every Friday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Place des Douves in Montfort-sur-Meu. Another weekly market is held every Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Place Saint Nicolas.
