Mont-Dol is a granite massif reaching a height of 65 metres. From Mont-Dol, there are views across the Bay of Cancale as far as Granville.

Culture and history

The Musée du Tertre is located on the upper Tertre, in the miller's historic house next to the windmill. In July and August, it displays objects from the prehistoric site discovered in Mont-Dol, as well as a collection of the rocks that make up Mont-Dol.

The Église Saint-Pierre is mentioned as early as 1158 and preserves wall paintings from the 12th and 15th centuries. The Notre-Dame de l’Espérance tower was blessed in 1857.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Espérance stands on the summit of Mont-Dol and offers views across the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. It was created from a telegraph built around 1802 for the Paris–Brest Chappe telegraph line: the telegraph was discontinued in 1854, after which the tower was converted into the Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Espérance.

The Calvaire du Tertre is a monumental cross erected in 1891. The Tertre is also home to two 19th-century windmills.

Views

The Calvaire du Tertre offers elevated views of the village, Saint-Samson Cathedral in Dol-de-Bretagne and the Marais noirs. From the Notre-Dame de l’Espérance tower, visitors can see Mont-Saint-Michel and Mont Tombelaine. In good weather, the bouchots used for mussel farming can also be seen from there.

Circular trail and art

The Circuit du Tertre is an easy 4.5-kilometre circular trail for walkers, starting in Mont-Dol. The trail leads to the summit of the Tertre, where it offers panoramic views across the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. For 1.5 kilometres, the Circuit du Tertre follows the coastal river Guyoult.

The Galerie du Tertre welcomes amateur and professional artists. Each artist can display their work for one or two weeks at a time; the gallery is open from the April school holidays until the All Saints' school holidays.
