The Château de Hédé was built in the 11th or 12th century as an imposing fortress on a rocky promontory overlooking the plain. The surviving remains include a large keep and the curtain walls of the outer bailey. Since 1926, the remains have been protected as historic monuments.

History and culture

The oldest part of the church in Bazouges is its Romanesque north wall, dating from the 11th century. The church also contains a granite tomb effigy from the 15th century, which is listed in the register of historic monuments.

The Maison sur pilotis was originally built as a boathouse during the interwar period. The exhibition at the Maison du Canal includes models, objects and historical documents. At the Théâtre de Poche, Hédé-Bazouges offers a programme of live performances throughout the year.

Locks and canal

The eleven locks at the Hédé-Bazouges site overcome a difference in elevation of 27 m over a distance of 2.3 km. The site of the eleven locks can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A lock keeper’s house dating from the Napoleonic era served primarily as a storage facility for operating the eleven locks and as a workshop for manufacturing the lock gates.

Several former towpaths have been developed into shady greenways, allowing hikers to explore the banks of the canal. Breizhgo bus route no. 8A serves the “Pierre Barenton” stop; from there, it is 2.3 km to the site.

Paths and nature

The observation trails in Hédé-Bazouges feature ten tables with educational illustrated guides. The Bazouges pond welcomes migratory birds in spring and autumn.

The Circuit du Château is a 9.2 km route for hiking and mountain biking. The Duguesclin cycle route no. 17 is an 18 km bicycle route. The Circuit des Chalets et de l’Étang starts at the car park behind the Maison du Canal.
