Saint-Coulitz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Saint-Coulitz encompasses several chapters of Breton local history: religious buildings, water engineering and technological development stand alongside natural landscapes and sightseeing opportunities.

History and Religious Architecture

Saint-Coulitz was established around the 12th century through its separation from the original parish of Plonévez-Porzay. The Church of Saint-Coulitz dates from the 16th century and was remodelled in 1655 and 1754. It contains a stone statue of Saint Herbot from 1586 and a 16th-century ossuary with three flattened arches.

Religious architecture also includes the Chapelle Saint-Laurent, also known as the Chapelle de Troboa, which was built in 1621. It was constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries from local blue slate, sandstone and dressed granite stones. Below the chapel is a Saint-Laurent fountain built in the 18th century.

Water, Nature and Trails

The Nantes–Brest Canal runs along the municipal area of Saint-Coulitz for a length of 7 kilometres and includes three locks there. The V6 greenway along the Nantes–Brest Canal passes Lock No. 235 in Saint-Coulitz. Saint-Coulitz is part of the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique.

Hydropower and Electrification

Hydropower is also part of the history of the town. The Saint-Coulitz hydroelectric power station was built in 1886 and commissioned on 20 March 1887. The Coatigrac'h hydroelectric power station enabled Saint-Coulitz to be electrified in 1887; Saint-Coulitz is described as the first electrified town in the west and the third in France.

Sightseeing and Horse Riding

The Saint-Coulitz wind farm on Menez Hill is open to visitors and operated by ENGIE Green. The Litli Hestur equestrian centre welcomes groups for tours of the riding centre, where they can get to know the horses. Litli Hestur also offers Icelandic horse riding.
