Mahalon: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Church of Saint-Magloire brings Mahalon’s architectural history to life through tangible evidence: it was partially rebuilt in 1772 and preserves numerous architectural elements from the Renaissance and Gothic periods dating from its original construction. Inside are columns from the Pont-Croix school dating from the 12th century. The church also houses a 16th-century funerary monument, considered one of the earliest Renaissance funerary monuments in Brittany.

Culture

Distinctive historic buildings can also be found outside the Church of Saint-Magloire. The Chapel of Saint-Pierre is a 16th-century building in the shape of a Latin cross and was constructed on the initiative of the lords of Kerandraon. It is located in the hamlet of Lohantec south of the village of Mahalon and was originally dedicated to Saint Hoantec. The granite calvary of Ar Groaz Ru is dated to 1647. Its crucifix depicts Christ surrounded by the Virgin Mary and John; a Pietà is located on the reverse. The large mill wheel and weir of the Meil Roscaradec mill have been preserved; the mill was in operation until 1967.

Nature

The Étang de Poulguidou covers 35 hectares and is protected under a biotope protection order because of its great biological importance. The Frout stream rises near Kerveneolic in Mahalon, flows into the Étang de Poulguidou and, after supplying nine watermills—six of them in Mahalon—continues towards the Goyen; there it reaches the river at Keridreuff in Pont-Croix.

The Base verte de loisirs is located in the village centre. The leisure area covers two hectares and offers wooded areas for walking, picnic areas, toilets, a water connection, parking spaces and free admission.

Activities

La Balade de l’Étang is a marked circular trail 11 kilometres long, with a stated duration of two and a half hours, and is accessible to the whole family. For cycling, the Vallée-du-Goyen mountain-biking route is available: the trail, marked as circular route 8, is 36 kilometres long and accessible to everyone, although some sections are more technically challenging when crossing the valleys. Traditions

The cidery at Tromelin farm offers a guided tour with an introduction to the production of cider and apple juice, an exhibition of agricultural equipment and a demonstration film; the products are then sampled. The Jeux Bretons area in Mahalon’s leisure facility presents and explains ten traditional Breton games.
