Culture and History

Locronan showcases its cultural history at prominent sites. The Church of Saint Ronan, built in the Flamboyant Gothic style, was constructed from 1424 to 1480 and placed under heritage protection in 1845.

The Musée d’Art Charles Daniélou houses a collection of Breton paintings, including works by Émile Simon, Désiré Lucas, Kamesuke Hiraga, and Yvonne Jean Haffen. The museum is also a stop on the Route des Peintres en Cornouaille. Its holdings include a painting by Odette Pauvert that is classified as a historic monument and a national treasure.

A guided tour of Locronan lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and takes place on foot.

Paths and Religious Tradition

The Grande Troménie route extends for just over 12 kilometers across the Porzay plain and the Montagne du Prieuré. It is marked by 12 stations with 12 granite crosses and 42 small shelters. These shelters contain old wooden or stone statues of saints. The sacred route of the Grande Troménie is accessible only every six years.

Another way to discover the landscape and townscape is the “À la découverte du patrimoine” walking trail, which starts in Locronan and is 6.1 kilometers long.

Locronan lies at the heart of an ancient druidic nemeton on the slopes of Menez Lokorn, whose summit reaches 289 meters. La Montagne de Locronan also reaches an altitude of 289 meters and offers panoramic views of the Bay of Douarnenez and the Crozon Peninsula.

Townscape and Customs

To preserve the authenticity of the historic center, cars remain outside Locronan’s historic core.

In Locronan, the bread of the dead continues to be distributed on the first Sunday in November. On the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, young men from Locronan who come of age that year plant the maypole in the square near the fountain.
