Caurel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Caurel is located on the shores of Lac de Guerlédan. The lake stretches for 12 km; opposite it lie the plateaus of Caurel and Saint-Gelven, characterised by meadows and cultivated land.

Nature

The Bois de Caurel runs along the winding shores of Lac de Guerlédan and leads to slate ridges offering views of the Forêt de Quénécan and the lake.

Hiking

There are a total of 40 km of marked hiking trails along Lac de Guerlédan. They run partly along the shore and partly above the lake, making it possible to walk all the way around it. The Le Bois de Caurel hiking trail is 10.6 km long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Les Landes de Caurel is 14.2 km long and starts at the church car park in Caurel.

The hike through the Bois de Kériven follows in the footsteps of the historic slate workers, who were known here as “gueules bleues”.

Water

Lac de Guerlédan is suitable for canoeing and kayaking, water skiing and sailing. Beau Rivage has one of the largest landscaped beaches on Lac de Guerlédan and is the starting point for a cruise aboard the Duc de Guerlédan to explore the lake.

From 12 July to 31 August 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Club de canoë/kayak de Guerlédan offers canoe and kayak rentals for independent trips on Lac de Guerlédan at the Beau Rivage site, 22530 Caurel.

The Duc de Guerlédan II offers a narrated one-and-a-half-hour cruise. In July and August, it takes place daily at 3 p.m.; in April, May, June, September and October, by reservation. The Duc de Guerlédan I offers a three-hour lunch cruise, which takes place exclusively by reservation from April to October.

History and Culture

Slate quarrying in the area around Caurel developed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The history of the village of Caurel was shaped by slate quarrying in the 19th century.

The Chapelle Saint-Golven is a 17th-century slate chapel dedicated to Saint Golven, also known as Goulven. The Pardon des carriers, the traditional pilgrimage or celebration of the slate workers, used to be held around the chapel.
