Culture and History

The Saint-Laurent parish church received figurative stained-glass windows in 1868 from Gustave-Pierre Dagrand, a glass artist from Bordeaux. The parish church’s bell tower was rebuilt in 1925.

The cultural association Mehaineko Kakolada, based in Méharin, was founded in 2022 to organise the Buhame Erreka spectacle. Buhame Erreka combines theatre, dance and singing.

The de Belzunce family, a noble lineage from Navarre, settled at Maison Belzunce in 1600. Maison Belzunce, a manor house dating from the 14th century, stands on the rounded crest of a hill in Méharin.

The Maison Belzunce estate is characterised by a majestic hundred-year-old oak tree.

The historic site of Abbaye Saint-Jean-de-Sorde lies in the wider region around Méharin.

Landscape

The Garralda summit is located near Méharin. The Hoxahandia summit is also located near Méharin. The Erregelu summit is likewise near Méharin, as is Mont Baïgura.

Cycling

The Saint-Palais–Hasparren cycling stage is a challenging route just under 50 kilometres long that combines the Basque Country’s architectural and natural heritage. The cycling stage follows the D124 to the church of Garris, crosses the heights of Beyrie-sur-Joyeuse and then descends to Méharin.

On the Saint-Palais–Hasparren cycling stage, the route climbs from Méharin via the Pessarou district along the D14 towards Saint-Esteben, offering panoramic views along the way.
