Culture and history

The Somport Tunnel on the Pau–Canfranc railway line was built by the Compagnie du Midi between 1910 and 1914.

The Somport Tunnel was electrified and put into operation in 1928.

In Urdos, the Somport Tunnel is listed as a Monument historique.

Fort du Portalet stands in Urdos on a rock face above the Gave d'Aspe. Guided tours take visitors through the galleries, barracks and covered ways of Fort du Portalet.

Hiking and landscape

The route from Urdos to Somport follows the pilgrimage routes through the high-altitude Aspe Valley region and reveals the geological treasures of the upper Aspe Valley. It runs from Gare d'Urdos to Col du Somport along the pilgrimage routes.

Route no. 67 to Refuge du Larry begins at the former customs buildings in Urdos and leads through a wild valley with extensive pastures, where shepherds and sheep can be found, up to Refuge du Larry, located at an altitude of 1,724 metres.

At Estive du Larry, visitors can meet the shepherd and taste cheese made using traditional methods.

Hike no. 20 to Lac d'Estaens is classified as easy and takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes on foot. On the French side, it passes through Parc national des Pyrénées and offers beautiful views of the high valley.

Nature and activities

The “Terre de rencontres” discovery trail has five stations for observing nature.

Espace Somport is located in the heart of Parc national des Pyrénées. Cross-country skiing is possible there in winter. Espace Somport also has a wellness area with a sauna and an outdoor whirlpool on a terrace overlooking the Pyrenees.

The Ecole de ski nordique du Somport also offers snowshoe excursions.

Visitors can buy cheese at Cabane d'Escouret during the season.
