Church and history

The Church of Saint-Étienne was probably rebuilt or extensively altered after the destruction caused by the Wars of Religion in the 17th century. It is a traditional Basque church with a single-nave layout, a panelled ceiling and two levels of galleries. Its furnishings include an 18th-century altarpiece. The porch contains disc-shaped grave steles, as does the cemetery; one of these steles may date from the 15th century.

Sorhaburu is a noble house mentioned in 1249, built on the foundations of a 13th-century castle. Historically, Sorhaburu served as a customs house, hospice and official residence intended to assume the regional representation of the power of the Kingdom of Navarre. The Betatua burial cave in Saint-Esteben contains a human skull and is closed for its protection.
