Culture and history
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built between the late 11th century and the first half of the 12th century and consecrated in 1145. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, it became the burial place of the last rulers of Navarre.
The Bilaà oppidum is a fortified protohistoric site dating from the 2nd to 1st century BC. It overlooks the Gave valley and covers approximately 3 hectares; its earthworks reach a height of 6 to 7 metres.
The Musée de Lescar is located in the former cellars of the bishop’s palace. It displays archaeological objects, including jewellery and vases from the Bronze and Iron Ages, a 4th-century mosaic, terra sigillata pottery, finely crafted ancient jewellery and everyday objects. The Musée de Lescar can be visited by prior request to the Lescar Tourist Office.
Nature
The fortification walls of Lescar, some of which date from the 5th and 12th centuries, are now laid out as a Mediterranean garden and offer a panorama of the Pyrenees.
Lac des Carolins is highlighted as a preferred place for fishing, walking and exploring nature. Along the path around the lake, visitors can observe swans, herons, ducks and dragonflies, as well as possibly European pond turtles.
Getting around
Lescar bears the “Communes Haltes – Chemins de Compostelle en France” designation for the services, facilities and welcome provided by the municipality to hikers and pilgrims. The yellow-marked hiking route “Lescar – Cité et nature” starts at the car park of the Plaine des Sports on Chemin de Beneharnum in Lescar.
