History and Cultural Heritage
The Chapelle de Gabas is listed and protected as a historic monument in Laruns. Its main construction phases date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Gabas was also home to the Commandery of Gabas, a modest station on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
The Church of Saint-Pierre received a total of 49 figurative and decorative stained-glass windows in 1881 and 1883. The cultural identity of Laruns also includes the Ossau language, singing, dancing and centuries-old traditions; there, they are regarded as living components of this identity.
The Hèstas de Noste Dama de Laruntz, also known as the Fêtes de Notre-Dame de Laruns, is listed in the French inventory of intangible cultural heritage.
Festivals and Local Culture
The patronal festival Heste de Nouste Dame takes place in Laruns every year on 15 and 16 August. The festival includes traditional costumes, processions, dances and songs.
The Hera deu Hromatge is held every year on the first Sunday in October. At this event, the best cheese made by shepherds and producers from the Ossau Valley is awarded.
In the centre of Laruns, the Médiathèque Municipale hosts art exhibitions and conferences, as well as nature workshops and various performances throughout the year.
Excursions in the Surrounding Area
The Train d'Artouste can be reached from the village of Laruns; it is located 20 km from Laruns. The route runs for 10 km along a mountainside at an altitude of 2,000 m.
