Guethary: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Église Saint-Nicolas has been listed in its entirety as a Monument historique since 3 August 2001. Its main construction phases date back to the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries.

Culture

The Musée de Guéthary is located on the ground floor of the neo-Basque Villa Saraleguinea. It displays the donation of the sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski, comprising sculptures, ceramics and numerous drawings. Since 1985, from May to October, the museum has organised exhibitions of contemporary art in the fields of painting, sculpture and photography.

Roman remains were discovered on the grounds of the Guéthary railway station in 1984. Successive excavations revealed a factory for producing salted fish dating from the early imperial period. The Roman collection of the Musée de Guéthary notably presents an exceptional funerary inscription.

As part of the Routes de la Terre, two geological information panels corresponding to video stations no. 8 and 9 can be seen on the Jetée des Alcyons in Guéthary. Pelota games, singing, dancing, markets and traditional festivals are scheduled throughout the year in the village’s central square in Guéthary.

Nature

The Colline de Cenitz is a 1.2-hectare nature reserve on the edge of the tidal zone. The area was acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral in 2003 and is managed by the municipality of Guéthary. Narrow, sunken paths through heather and gorse cross the Colline de Cenitz; butterflies protected under Natura 2000 live there, and protected plant species are also found.

The Terrasse Pierre Lious is a viewpoint from which the ocean, the Parlementia wave and the coastal panorama from Biarritz to Fontarabie can be observed. At the port of Guéthary, the quay wall dates from 1891, while the promenade on the breakwater was built in 1936.

Cycling

The circular cycling route “Guéthary, a balcony overlooking the ocean” begins in Guéthary, is 19 km long, takes 2 hours 30 minutes and has a moderate level of difficulty.

The cycling tour can be started at Saint-Jean-de-Luz railway station; a TER train connection is provided at the beginning for the journey to the starting point.

The Guéthary Tourist Office provides practical information on museum opening hours, restaurants and public transport, as well as bus excursions to Bilbao and the Guggenheim, Espelette and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, and Pamplona and San Sebastián.
