A walk along the Nive d’Arnéguy reveals the town’s border location: the two riverbanks belong to different countries. At the entrance to Arnéguy, at kilometre 8.9, you can visit the last French village or cross the bridge into Spain.
History and culture
Arnéguy was formerly a district of the village of Luzaide and became a municipality in the 18th century as a result of various treaties between France and Spain.
The Église de l’Assomption in Arnéguy dates from the 17th century, was later remodelled and houses a Baroque altarpiece. The Bordes d’Ibarrola are barns used for transhumance, with haylofts and slate roofs. Near the Col d’Hegantza, the Way of St James also follows an old route that has been used since Roman times.
Nature
The Hegantza hike is 17.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 910 m, is difficult and is indicated as taking seven hours to walk. It starts at the car park near the frontón and the church of Arnéguy.
The Hegantza route passes through mixed forests, past farms and through peat bogs and mountain pastures associated with transhumance. The springs and peat bogs of Xaltroko etxola comprise wetlands with peat mosses and carnivorous butterworts along the Beillurti stream. The Col d’Hegantza is a viewpoint at an altitude of 1,065 m.

Canyoning Pays Basque in Arnéguy offers various formats: introductory, Zen, sporty, self-guided and relaxed options.
The La Scandibérique cycle route leaves French territory at Arnéguy; cyclists face almost 18 km of climbing to the crossing over the Pyrenees.
At Ferme Argaia in Arnéguy, visitors can meet the producer and taste farm cheese made from sheep’s milk. Ferme Argaia in Arnéguy is open daily; advance booking by telephone is requested.
