Hike No. 9 Barétous – Vallon de Lourdios from Issor is a very easy, 3 km-long trail with a walking time of 1 hour and an elevation gain of 70 m. It passes through a forest and crosses waterways; in summer, the shade and coolness provide pleasant conditions.

Hiking

Hike No. 9 Barétous – Vallon de Lourdios is marked in yellow and begins at the car park at the entrance to Issor, opposite the church.

Hike No. 91 – Tumulus de la Serre is an easy circular trail from Issor covering 5.4 km, with a walking time of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Culture

The Église Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste has a remarkable gilded Baroque wooden altarpiece from the 17th century depicting the Coronation of Saint John the Evangelist. The church also contains two 18th-century oak balustrades. It was rebuilt in 1687; its bell tower was built in 1924.

The Fronton d’Issor dates from 1958 and is associated with Basque pelota. This is a traditional sport played with a racket or with the bare hand.

History

The Tumulus de la Serre are Neolithic burial remains. The stone circles at the Tumulus de la Serre provide evidence of very ancient pastoral farming in these mountains.

Cheese and Agriculture

By reservation, Ferme Bidalot offers visits in Issor, where visitors can meet 100 Basco-Béarnaise sheep and 75 Alpine goats. A visit includes an explanation of the milk’s journey from milking to cheesemaking and ends with a tasting of homemade cheeses. Ferme Bidalot produces sheep’s cheese, goat’s cheese and a mixed sheep-and-goat cheese speciality; the cheeses are available in pieces or as 2.5 kg tommes.

At Ferme Récébire in Issor, traditional mountain cheese is made on a small mountain farm from the milk of 300 Basco-Béarnaise sheep and 40 goats, and can be tasted on site.
