Culture and history

The Church of Saint Vincent the Deacon was built in the 16th century and completed in 1534. It was restored from 1866 to 1869 and has been partially protected as a historic monument since 1988. Its nave comprises six bays, along with two side aisles divided by chapels and a square bell tower.

The Château de Coarraze is a privately owned historic monument. Henri IV spent his childhood there until the age of eight. Visitors to the château can see the park, the landscaped garden, the château and a 14th-century tower. From Coarraze railway station, the château can be reached in 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bicycle.

Coarraze’s historic craft traditions included making combs and wooden kitchen utensils, as well as weaving linen and wool fabrics. The village also has three renovated historic washhouses, including the Lavoir du Bayaü and the Lavoir de la place Henri IV.

Landscape and water

Near Coarraze, the feeder canal of the Canal du Lagoin runs through a 200-metre-long tunnel beneath the Château de Dufaü to the Coarraze distributor.

Coarraze is one of the municipalities in the Gave de Pau Natura 2000 site. This is an extensive river network with a still vibrant saligue system. The Bayaü viewpoint offers a different perspective of the village: from there, views extend over Vieux Coarraze, as well as the church, the château and the Gave bridge, in surroundings shaped by the canal and woodland.

The Lac de Sargaillouse lies in the Bois de Coarraze and is an artificial lake covering half a hectare. Forest and wetland habitats meet there; the lake is also used for family fishing and picnics.

Exploring Coarraze

Circuit vélo 4 is a circular route that runs along both banks of the Gave de Pau. Circuit vélo 2 is an easy 27-kilometre circular cycling route that passes the Château de Coarraze. Between Igon and Coarraze, the Baburet footbridge can be crossed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

The Balade patrimoine Coarraze is a very easy 2.4-kilometre walking route for all age groups and starts at the town hall car park. The Lac de Sargaillouse is used for family fishing and picnics.

Excursions by electric bicycle are offered under the name “Easy balade in Coarraze”. The bicycles can be equipped with panniers and child seats.
