Culture and history

Historic châteaux, churches and a sanctuary on the Gave d'Oloron shape the landscape of Carresse-Cassaber. The Château de Cassaber was completed in 1643 following the commission given by Zacharie de Laffite. As a whole, it has been listed as a historic monument by decree of 16 December 2010.

The parish church of Saint-Etienne in Carresse was built between 1841 and 1843 and has a neoclassical façade. The parish church of Saint-Jacques in Cassaber was completely rebuilt in 1853. Between 1877 and 1886, a second aisle was added on the north side; all of its stained-glass windows were supplied in 1899 by the glass painter Bernard Montaut from Pau. The history of the village is also linked to a literary biography: the writer Paul-Jean Toulet lived in Carresse from 1889 to 1898.

The Château Lassalle has been restored and is privately owned.

On the Gave d'Oloron

South of Carresse-Cassaber, the Gave d'Oloron runs from the village of Castagnède to the exit of Cassaber towards Sorde-l'Abbaye. At the exit of the old village of Cassaber, the Notre-Dame du Séqué sanctuary stands on the banks of the Gave d'Oloron. The sanctuary was built with a statue of Notre-Dame du Bac. Its benches provide an opportunity for a spiritual pause, for reading or praying the rosary.

Nature and activities

Carresse-Cassaber has yellow-marked circular and hiking trails leading to unusual places in the municipality. The numerous municipal paths are accessible to mountain bikes. A canoe and kayak launch site in Carresse-Cassaber provides access to the Gave d'Oloron.

The Boucle de Las Arroques starts on Rue Paul-Jean Toulet opposite the church in Carresse-Cassaber. It is a 13-kilometre hiking trail on natural ground, accessible on foot.

Pool Bidala picnic area

The Pool Bidala picnic area in Carresse-Cassaber is located next to a second-category fishing water. The site has tables, barbecue areas, litter bins, a boules court and bicycle racks.
